Recent civil wars get extended by external actors trying to shape the result and include varying amounts of ethnic cleansing. Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Ethiopia, Libya, all the way back to the breakup of Yugoslavia.

A different possible frame: this is one theater in a global cold (occasionally hot) war between educated secular urban dwellers and uneducated superstitious rurals.
