Dumb, self-serving (although often objectively self-damaging) ideas and politics aren't challenged and spread by social media, friends and family. Willful ignorance solidifies them to protect their identity above else, and the further and further they go down this hole, the harder it is for them to dig back out. Kurt comes to mind.
