Read the intro to Bill Connelly's piece with his preseason SP+ rankings. The rankings tend to be close on a majority of top 25 teams. Obviously, there will be some surprises (no one expected Penn State and Clemson to be as bad as they were last year) but using the uncertainty that exists for, say, one-third of the teams isn't a reason to dismiss the entire exercise of making data-based preseason predictions.
