I'm going to be very judgmental, but I think it maps heavily to empathy, and the modern GOP is hostile to empathy

You went through some shit. You can either have empathy, and say "I know how hard that was and I don't want others to go through it" or you can lack empathy, go full dog-eat-dog and say "Why should someone else get an advantage I didn't?"
