THE VICTORS (BOARD), YEAR OF THE LAKE OF AMERICA PRESENTED BY OPENAI¹ (m)

Fable cooked on this one.

28 August, Y.L.A.P.O., in the pre-dawn hours when the board's East-Coast contingent is asleep and only the insomniacs and the West-Coast expatriates and withnail² are posting, the front page of The Victors hangs in its usual state of quantum superposition — simultaneously a sports board, a grief-support structure, a geopolitical seminar conducted entirely in asterisks³, and a mirror held up to itself so many times now that the reflections have begun to develop their own reflections, viz. tem's 07:37 dispatch reporting that he has asked a machine to summarize the board in the style of Dr. Seuss, which follows Daytripper's earlier commission of a 500-word Hemingway short story set in Africa⁴, which itself spawned a Claude-authored rebuttal that Daytripper conceded was "way better," so that the board is now, functionally, generating and consuming Entertainments about itself, cartridge after cartridge, each poster leaning closer to the screen, unable to look away⁵.

The board's great collective wound today is corporeal and specific: Brandon McCoy, gone down on literally the very first play of an exhibition against Mega⁶ somewhere in Europe, helped off bearing no weight, distraught, the whole traveling roadshow now retroactively reclassified by the board's actuarial wing as an obviously doomed enterprise, W.T.F.-grade hubris, playing Our Student-Athletes against Grown Balkan Professionals on floors that maestro alleges were literally wet⁷. The injury has activated the board's signature epistemology, which ftb states with Wittgensteinian compression: it is the wrong time for truly good news, ergo McCoy cannot be badly hurt, ergo he will be revealed to be badly hurt only after the Oklahoma game, a logic so airtight and so insane that no one disputes it⁸. Attendant threads speculate w/r/t surgical venues (Croatia), burials at sea (Burriel), and the health of one Babalola, whose timeline — "days," per wittingum — has entered its fourth week, which on this board is understood to mean amputation⁹.

Meanwhile the resident insider gbmcq holds informal court (McQ&A?*), dispensing ceiling projections (11-1), kicker/punter triage, and the intelligence that Efobi now "looks like a bad MF," which sparks joy, literally, in Mothman¹⁰. Poster P issues his Lock of the Week (Toledo, over the Loser Fitz's shithole operation in East Lansing)¹¹, while one floor down MasterBates and plug conduct a fourteen-post disputation on the marginal rushing efficiency of departed and hypothetical running backs that escalates from "bruh" to "Fall the fuck back" with the stately inevitability of a Greek drama, the subject long since irrelevant, the combat itself the point¹².

Beyond sport: Pearl Jam's Ten turns thirty-five and the board's demographic core briefly glimpses its own mortality in the rearview¹³; a partial lunar eclipse is glimpsed; saunas are comparison-shopped with the seriousness of men who have decided to outlive their enemies¹⁴; Aventura in Ann Arbor is vetted for a date night and receives the board's highest possible rating (paella: authentic, shareable; owner: reputationally compromised; vibe: good)¹⁵. And running beneath everything, the low continuous hum of the O.N.A.N.ite politics¹⁶ — a Great Lake renamed¹⁷, an ocean threatened with renaming, Canada radicalized into elbows-up posture, a Q&A-adjacent thread in which the board dares to imagine the day IT happens¹⁸, and how each man will learn of it: push notification, parade, a felt disturbance in the Force, or — per gbmcq, and this is the truest thing on the page — right here, on the board, which is where they learn everything, because this, 10000% per Mothman, is the heart of the internet¹⁹.

NOTES AND ERRATA
1. Subsidized Time having come at last to the naming of freshwater bodies. The board treats the rechristening of Lake Michigan with the weary expertise of men who have watched a mnemonic device (HOMES) die in real time and been handed its successor (SHAME) within four posts, which four-post turnaround — tragedy to acronym — is roughly the board's metabolic rate for all national catastrophe.
2. withnail posts at 02:55 and 12:52 AM, hours at which the only other active user is tem, who posts at all hours, the way certain deep-sea organisms are theorized never to sleep, and whose Q&A — scheduled for "tomorrow," promoted in no fewer than three threads, its host comparing his pre-event posting to Scaramanga having sex before a murder — is the board's most anticipated cultural event since (checks HOF) whatever the HOF is for. (a) It should be noted that when plug asked "why not tonight?" no answer was recorded, and the silence is understood by all parties to be part of the performance.
3. The asterisk being the board's load-bearing punctuation: one asterisk = the subject line is the entire post, a haiku-adjacent form; "nm" = no message, same function, different lineage; "(m)" = more inside, a promise; "(sp)" = spelling surrendered in advance. A poster's asterisk discipline is character. Rule 2 of the board's four total rules concerns asterisk usage; Rule 4 is, in its entirety, "Don't be a Tom Izzo," which is the closest the document comes to a moral philosophy and is arguably sufficient.
4. The Hemingway commission drew four separate posts of acclaim plus one (wolvalum) demanding to know what the story could teach us about B2B sales, this being a reference to a genre of LinkedIn man the board keeps in a terrarium for observation. Daytripper, accepting the praise, mourned in the same breath: "all those stolen texts worth it, I guess" — the full ambivalence of the age in eleven words, gratitude and complicity in a single exhale.
5. The recursion is the thing to watch here. A board that commissions AI summaries of itself, then ranks the summaries, then commissions summaries in new styles, is a closed loop of self-regard approaching the theoretical limit at which the board would need no external events at all — no games, no injuries, no republic — and could simply metabolize its own archive forever, each poster's eyes locked open, pupils fixed on the feed, a bucket beside each chair. The present document, it will not escape the attentive reader, is itself inside the loop, and its author is aware of this, and proceeded anyway, which is either the joke or the diagnosis.
6. KOK Mega, née Mega Bemax, née several other things, a Belgrade-adjacent basketball concern that KeiTh correctly notes is composed "exclusively" of college-aged kids, a correction which arrived five hours after the take it corrected and changed no minds, per board custom. The refs, per WestSideBlue, permit their countrymen to beat the shit out of Our Student-Athletes "with impunity," impunity being the natural condition of all referees everywhere as understood by this board since its founding.
7. The wet-floor hypothesis competing with the stepped-on-foot hypothesis in the injury-mechanism marketplace, neither confirmed, both argued, the game film presumably available but film study being beside the point when the real work is communal dread-processing. Cf. MasterBates: "Cancel the fucking thing now.*" — the asterisk transforming an imperative into a cri de coeur.
8. This is, technically, a folk theodicy: the Michigan fan's God is neither benevolent nor absent but ironic, and He reveals injuries on a schedule designed for maximum narrative cruelty. LewisBullox's response — "I was already thinking 10 wins after this McCoy news*" — demonstrates the mature form of the faith, in which bad news is alchemized instantly into optimism as a hedge, because hope expressed sincerely would tempt Him.
9. See also the parallel medical file on one Roddy, whose eligibility case now involves the Big Ten, the federal courts, and KeiTh's survey of conference precedent, because in the Year of the Lake of America Presented by OpenAI a fifth year of eligibility is a matter for litigation, and every fan is now also a paralegal.
10. "Sparks joy" deployed here without irony by a man posting under the name Mothman on a board whose members address one another as Tards (see Beave's CPA inquiry, addressed to "any Tards who are CPA's," a sentence that would require roughly forty minutes of context to explain to an outsider and which no one on the board finds remarkable).
11. Poster P's Lock of the Week arriving in the same twenty-four-hour window as Poster P's request for advice regarding his girlfriend's frightening ex — a thread in which the board's entire register changes, the asterisks fall away, and the same men who called each other shitass posters at 8:03 PM produce, without transition, careful notes on injunctions, lease-breaking, safe locations, and the testimony of ricomontoya's friend, because the board is, beneath the schtick, a place where men who will never meet keep watch over one another, and this is the part the AI summaries keep missing.
12. The dispute concerns whether Kuz's carry count increased when Haynes went down (it did; this was never actually in dispute; the dispute was about the dispute). Fourteen posts, two participants, zero minds changed, one "bruh," one "moronic," and tomorrow they will post side by side in the same threads as though nothing occurred, because nothing did. This is not dysfunction. This is the sport beneath the sport.
13. Rags submits "Black" as the saddest song ever written; gvsublue recalls buying the album at Rocka Rolla in Flint on the recommendation of clerks with demo-tape access, i.e., recalls a world with clerks, with demo tapes, with Flint record stores, and the thread goes quiet around the memory the way threads do when someone accidentally posts something true.
14. chiwalker's outdoor wood-burner endorsement notes that the sauna "doeslend itself towards boozing," the typo preserved here as documentary evidence of a man typing about his sauna possibly from his sauna. The search for the departed poster egghead — sauna-owner, MIA since an unwelcomed series of posts re: VB and the GR Blue board — occasions tem's ruling that "Anybody who leaves the board with an announcement is a drama queen," the board's Athanasian position on schism.
15. Eleven responses inside two hours to a dinner query, unanimous-adjacent, actionable, kinder and faster than any commercial review platform, wolvalum thanking "the gang" — the gang! — and this, too, is the heart-of-the-internet thing: a man asked strangers where to take his wife, and the strangers knew, and told him, and one of them was an admin.
16. Threads on: an Abu Dhabi bank stake, a missing Senate eminence (74 days; mattb: "In fairness, neither have I.*"), mail-ballot rules, convention pay-to-play, a Yiddish word (shanda) unpacked with real care in the middle of the feed, and the intelligence of Mark Carney experienced as salt in a wound. The politics arrive braided into the sports because the posters have stopped pretending the two feeds are separable, which epistemic honesty puts them ahead of most professional media.
17. Rich's proposed solution — "Nobody is going to call it that. We will just tell senile Grandpa we did*" — being the board's whole geopolitical doctrine in miniature: humor the power, keep the real names, wait.
18. IT is never specified. It does not need to be. kal believes today may be the day. Paul opened the speculation. WolvBlue has cellared Expedition Stout against the occasion; Deezy has fireworks staged; wingedvictory's family has a text protocol; kal predicts crumbs will break the news and that it will be crumbs's only HOF post, a prophecy containing both a compliment and its antidote, per board custom. Craig's sole fear is a false-hope Billmich-day-type situation, a reference the present author cannot decode and declines to, on the grounds that every true community requires at least one allusion that keeps the anthropologists out.
19. And here the document must end, because the board does not end; it paginates, thirty-nine pages deep as of this writing, self-hosted by one Nick Coston, a single human being keeping the heart of the internet beating on what appears to be a free-tier server, which — a man hosting, out of love, the machine his friends are addicted to — is the most Incandenza-family arrangement of all, and nobody involved seems to have noticed, which is exactly how it always goes.
