I'll be honest, this was super tough to get through. Not because basically the entire book is killing and raping and repeating that over and over but because the writing style was just so hard for me to get through. It was my first Cormac Mccarthy book and maybe this wasn't a good one to start with but it was a slog to get through. The lack of quotations and massive sentences with few commas or other punctuation played a part in that for sure but I think the overall vibe of the book contributed as well
The last few chapters I found flowed faster and were more interesting, but that kind of made me wonder about the whole book. At the end are we supposed to care about the judge and the kid's relationship? The kid was barely mentioned for half the book and the two have a handful of interactions. There was no real relationship established there so it just was hard for me to care about them at all. Maybe that was the point idk. But it just didn't hit for me although I did find the last few chapters more interesting plot wise.
Maybe part of my disappointment/frustration came because I just read Lonesome Dove. It is possibly my favorite book now and just has tons of fascinating characters whereas this book was completely different even though both are "westerns"
