The European leagues crown their champions based on the best record in a fair competition. The American leagues crown their champions by playing a lengthy regular season and then ignoring that large sample to emphasize the results of tiny series or one-off games. Add in relegation and the reward of playing in Europe for the teams that finish in the top spots and you have a competition that is important right from the start. In the US, you have NBA teams resting their best players and MLB teams selling off their best assets, two things that would almost never happen in the rest of the world.
Spurs nearly got relegated last year despite being one of the richest teams in England. The fact that they have lost their first two matches and have not yet scored a goal is a big deal.
