Tonight's recap in the style of Mitch Albom

The Lesson of a Monday Night

We sit at our illuminated screens, tapping away into the dark, searching for something—anything—to tell us we belong.

It was a late August evening, the kind where the summer heat still clings to the back of your neck like a memory you aren't ready to let go of. On a little corner of the internet, a group of souls gathered. They didn't know each other’s real names. They went by handles like Daytripper, Poster P, and Cincywolve.

They talked about football, yes. They argued about a young boy named Channing Goodwin and whether a receiver’s true worth lies in his hands or in his willingness to block for a teammate.

"Realistically," a man named Craig wrote, "being a good blocker is probably the top priority."

Isn't that always the way? We spend our youth chasing the flashy catches—the touchdown passes of life—only to realize, as the years bend us, that the real work is making space for someone else to run.

They talked about the news, too. The world was spinning hot and angry outside their windows. Presidents making threats about tariffs on Canada. Cabled wires cut in a front yard. A woman in Indiana frightened by a fifteen-year-old girl in a hijab.

We build such tall walls around our hearts. We get so afraid of what we don't understand.

And yet, right there amidst the noise of a broken world, a small miracle happened. Someone couldn't pronounce the word "12th" during an afternoon meeting. He confessed his small, embarrassing failure to the void. And do you know what the world gave him back?

Not cruelty. Not laughter.

"In fairness," a stranger replied, "it’s a challenging word to pronounce."

Compassion. In a single line of text.

Maybe that’s the secret Morrie would have talked about if he had spent an hour scrolling through a message board on an August night. We think we are logging on to talk about point spreads, or the price of salad dressing, or whether babaganoush is better than hummus.

We aren't.

We log on because the world is big and cold, and a quiet house can be very loud. We log on to whisper into the ether: I am here. Is anyone else?

And somewhere out in the deep, blue night, a stranger types back: I am here, too. Go Blue.

And for a few seconds, nobody is alone.
