A look at major U-M building construction projects
The University of Michigan continues to invest in infrastructure and building construction and remodeling across campus and beyond. Here is a look at major projects as U-M starts the 2026-27 academic year. More information can be found at umaec.umich.edu/projects/major-projects/.
Lorch Hall Renovation and Addition
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $210 million
Construction start: Spring 2026
Estimated construction completion: Winter 2030
Project at a glance: Lorch Hall is an L-shaped structure that was built in 1928 and includes a six-story tower that is flanked by two, four-story wings to the north and east, with an open courtyard space completing the block. This project will renovate the existing Lorch Hall building to accommodate the current and projected growth needs for the LSA Departments of Economics and Linguistics.
Raoul Wallenberg and Arthur Miller Houses Relocation and Renovations
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $8 million
Construction start: Winter 2026
Estimated construction completion: Fall 2026
Project at a glance: This project will renovate and repurpose two historic houses on Central Campus: the Arthur Miller house and the Raoul Wallenberg house. The Wallenberg house was moved from 308 E. Madison to a site next to the Miller house at 439 S. Division St. The two houses will be connected by a new 845-gross-square-feet addition that will include a shared elevator for accessibility. Both houses will undergo comprehensive renovations to address deferred maintenance and code compliance issues.
Ross School of Business Executive Dormitory and Sam Wyly Hall Renovations
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $60 million
Construction start: Winter 2025
Estimated construction completion: Fall 2026
Project at a glance: This project will renovate approximately 134,000 gross square feet of existing space by replacing end-of-life infrastructure, addressing deferred maintenance such as replacement of the majority of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within the facilities and bringing the building up to current safety and accessibility codes. It will also allow the school to undertake a needed modest renovation for the guest rooms and other administrative, operational, and meeting spaces.

Budget: $250 million
Construction start: Fall 2023
Estimated construction completion: Summer 2027
Project at a glance: UMCI will be a world-class research, education and entrepreneurship center designed to advance innovation and talent-focused community development to propel city, region and statewide job creation and inclusive economic growth by stimulating economic development in the city of Detroit. The program will offer a mixed-model approach that includes both masters’ degrees and workforce development programs that will focus on technology and innovation.

Location: North Campus
Budget: $60 million
Construction start: Winter 2026
Estimated construction completion: Fall 2027
Project at a glance: This project proposes establishing an Electric Vehicle Center battery laboratory through the construction of an approximately 33,800 gross-square-foot addition to UMTRI. The new space will support research and hands-on experience in next-generation battery technologies. The lab will also include dedicated space for welding battery cells into modules, 500 channels of computer-controlled cell cycling, lab user offices, a conference room and a multi-use, reconfigurable lobby.
William W. Cook Legal Research Library and Allan and Alene Smith Underground Library
Location: Central Campus
Budget: $75.4 million
Construction start: TBD
Estimated construction completion: TBD
Project at a glance: This project will renovate approximately 77,000 gross square feet of existing library space and construct a small addition of approximately 3,500 gross square feet to modernize research and learning environments. The work will improve circulation, consolidate the physical collection, enhance access to staff and services, and strengthen connections between the Legal Research Library and the Underground Law Library.
