MasterBates's Catfish Hunter post caused me to look up the box score of this crazy 1965 game. Red Sox @ KC Athletics, 9-25-1965
Both teams had lousy seasons (Boston 60-96, KC 57-96) and they were playing in front of 9,000 fans on a Saturday night in late September. For some reason 58 year old Satchel Paige started for the Athletics. He threw 3 innings; 0 runs, 1 hit (a double by Carl Yastrzemski), 0 BB, 1 K. Pretty impressive for a 58 year old!
He was relieved by Diego Segui; those of us of a certain age remember his son, David Segui. Segui was relieved by 36 year old Don Mossi in his final season. Mossi had a pretty unique look; dudes don't look like this anymore!
The final Athletics pitcher was Jack Acker. Acker would start a brawl with Detroit in 1968 by beaning Jim Northrup. I've never been able to find video of it but the descriptions make it sound like a pretty nasty one; not shoving and jawing but guys really hitting each other. Earlier in the game an Athletics pitcher intentionally hit Al Kaline and broke his arm, causing him to miss several weeks. We've all seen the 1972 playoff bat-throwing kerfuffle between the clubs:
