Mark Sanchez to plead guilty in case connected to Indianapolis altercation

Former NFL quarterback and broadcaster Mark Sanchez has filed a motion to plead guilty in the case connected to an altercation in Indianapolis last October in which he was stabbed, according to online court records.
Sanchez filed the motion Thursday in Marion County (Ind.) Superior Court, though it is unclear which specific charges he is pleading guilty to. The motion also requested a sentencing hearing, which court documents indicate could take place on either Nov. 9 or Nov. 16. A judge must approve the plea deal.
Sanchez was charged with one felony count of battery resulting in bodily injury, plus misdemeanor charges of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, public intoxication endangering the life of another and battery resulting in bodily injury. A jury trial was scheduled to begin Tuesday.
Nick Sanchez Jr., the former Fox broadcaster’s legal adviser and older brother, called the filing a “positive development” in a statement released to The Athletic.
“We are finalizing an agreement with the prosecutor’s office that provides a path toward resolving the state’s case,” Sanchez Jr.’s statement read. “We’re also encouraged by the constructive conversations taking place regarding the related civil matter. There is real momentum toward bringing this entire chapter to a close.”
Sanchez, 39, was in Indianapolis to work a game between the Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders for Fox the weekend of the altercation. He attended practice the Friday before the game but did not call the game because of the confrontation with 69-year-old truck driver Perry Tole that led to Sanchez’s stabbing and hospitalization. Sanchez was deemed the alleged aggressor when prosecutors filed charges last October.
Tole filed a lawsuit against Sanchez and Fox Corporation a day after Sanchez was criminally charged, seeking damages and demanding a jury trial. Fox then parted ways with the former New York Jets quarterback roughly a month later, and replaced him with former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
“We are pleased with the constructive and professional conversations we’ve had with Mr. Sanchez’s team,” Matt Golitko, an attorney for Tole, said in a statement released to The Athletic. “Our discussions have been productive, and we’re on a positive path toward an agreement that will allow the parties to move forward. Mr. Tole appreciates the progress we have achieved and looks forward to an amicable resolution.”
In another statement released Thursday, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said, “Our priority remains securing justice for Mr. Tole.”
The altercation between Sanchez and Tole occurred early in the morning of Oct. 4, 2025, in downtown Indianapolis.
Sanchez allegedly confronted Tole for parking his truck in an alley between two hotels, claiming he was not allowed to be there. Prosecutors said video footage showed Sanchez attempting to enter the vehicle multiple times as the situation escalated.
At one point, Sanchez allegedly slammed Tole to the ground. The truck driver told police he used pepper spray on Sanchez, who he said smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech, before using a knife to defend himself. Sanchez then fled the scene, Tole said.
Police said Sanchez was stabbed multiple times in his upper-right torso, while Tole had a large laceration on his left cheek that also required hospitalization. Sanchez was arrested and booked after being released from the hospital, and he told a local reporter as he left Marion County Jail at the time that he was “just focused on my recovery.”
Detective Joshua Stayton stated in a probable cause affidavit that Tole’s description of the incident “closely matched” the extensive security footage he reviewed. The affidavit also noted that Sanchez told police he could not remember what had happened.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said at a news conference addressing the charges last October that the whole ordeal could have been avoided.
“We are literally talking about people fighting over a parking space or a dispute about where people are parking, and it resulted in someone receiving just incredibly significant injuries,” Mears said.
“Where this incident took place was an area of the city which was very well covered by surveillance footage. There are multiple angles of surveillance footage which capture the events that occurred. And in addition, we had a number of civilian witnesses who came forward (and) provided information about what took place.”
Sanchez starred at USC before being selected fifth by the New York Jets in the 2009 NFL Draft. He spent the first four seasons of his 10-year career with the Jets and had stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders. Sanchez threw 86 touchdown passes and 89 interceptions in 79 regular-season games.
