Dantonio won while Michigan was down, but he beat Michigan in the RR/Hoke years and was a hero. Mel Tucker got a $95 mill contract out of one pretty lucky win over a playoff Michigan team. John L Smith was 0-4 vs Michigan and Jonathan Smith 0-2.

I think Jonathan Smith did a decent job last year. They were competitive and not a clown show. It was only Year 2. But not only did he not beat Michigan (both games were reasonably competitive), he didn't have the mouth breathing, seething hatred that Izzo and Dantonio do.

I believe if JS had pounded the table a few times last year about the need to get better and compete for championships but also had added 'compete for B10 titles and beat Michigan" and "I hate that team and that school and beating them drives us every day", he would still be the MSU coach.
