…if I somehow thought it might be important, “the Detroit area.” I certainly would name the specific suburb we lived in, as that would almost certainly mean nothing to them.
(PLus, having grown up in Dearborn, I developed a habit of saying “Detroit area” to ppl who WOULD know where/what Dearborn was, too, since I was embarrasses to be from a city with such an ugly racist history. Of course, now ppl have entirely different associations with Dearborn.)
