Growing up, two of my friends (who were brothers) routinely joyrode in their parents' cars from 7th grade until they could legally drive.

Cruising, we called it. We took their cars out illegally dozens of times. Sometimes, we'd fill the car with middle schoolers. Though we didn't "steal" the cars, we were driving them illegally. Never came close to getting in an accident and both of my friends drove pretty damn well and carefully. Their dad was a car collector and had taught them both to drive to and from swap car meets. I always assumed that he pretty much knew what they were up to and only busted them when his wife found out and made him crack down. Life in the early 70s.
