Contin, I'd rather go for a guy with ties who left and proved himself elsewhere...

Then you know he can coach and he understands the program. But with the right fit, ties don't really matter. Probably anyway. RR was not the right fit. Whit seems to be, probably, but he's still in his honeymoon phase. We really don't have any history of a true outsider doing well since Bo. Harbaugh was what I called an outsider insider; he had been gone for 28 years but knew the program/tradition. But internals are no guarantee as Hoke and Moore showed. We got lucky with Mo and Carr.
Total crapshoot.
The problem is internals you'd love like Minter and McDonald are in the NFL. Same with Jaybaugh although he has not been a head guy yet. I am still intrigued with Fisch if he does well at Washington but he might want to go to the NFL too. Hard to find a stud coach who wants to stay in college these days.

If Whitt coaches 3-5 successful years, are you OK with an internal successor?

To clarify, the internal successor scenario would be that one of the coordinators (presumably) is an obvious rising star, and…

Depends on how things shake out. If we have a dominant defense and it's Jay Hill, I'd be open to it. He was an outstanding lower level HC.*

How do you know who the internal guys are? What if they have been recently hired? How can you possibly know at this point?*
