The Victors

Trump alleges conspiracies because that's what his ego requires every time he doesn't get something he wants: re-election in 2020, a win in the Iowa Caucus, an Emmy, etc. The wishful thinking here on the part of the rest of the CFB world other than Michigan is that they wanted WMU to win the game because that would have been an epic, memorable upset that would have spawned a million memes. It was a drab opening day of college football and Michigan losing at home to Western as a 28-point favorite would have made the day for people. They thought they had that reward when the clock hit zero and then they had it taken away from them in highly improbable fashion. Plus, a Hail Mary is a lucky play (hence the name) and the notion of rich and powerful Michigan needing divine intervention to beat Western is offensive like Elon Musk winning the lottery.

So anyway, you have a lot of motivated thinking ("Michigan deprived me of happiness and I am MAD") and then NBC dumps fuel on the fire with their inept broadcast. People WANT there to be a conspiracy and thus they start from the conclusion and then work back from there. The fact that they do so little to create a workable rationale for a conspiracy is perfect. They want something to be true so they just assume it.
