The polling is clear that the public generally supports trans rights (especially with respect to employment discrimination) but they don't support trans females playing in high school sports against XX women. That's the whole reason why the GOP harps on that issue so much. Two things are true:
1. GOP rhetoric on trans women playing sports is done in bad faith because they don't give a shit about women's sports.
2. You don't need to take an unpopular position just because the other side has baited you into it.
