I might have clutched a pearl. I'm somewhat dismissive of war crimes *when* war is unavoidable or plainly necessary. Many will disagree but the goal in Afghanistan shouldn't have been to spare civilians. Going to war means innocent and not-so-innocent civilians die.

Which is why you don't do it for stupid reasons as in Iraq or ugly ones as with Iran. War crimes, IMO, should have a much higher bar in Afghanistan than Iraq/Iran. Those responsible for starting an unnecessary war are auto-guilty of a class of war crimes seems reasonable.
