Jason Bateman is a fine actor in the sitcom mold. We don't expect more of him

But there are literally dozens of lead actors who are capable of inhabiting different roles and doing it exceptionally well. They all occupy some space where they are much more "serious actor" than Jason Bateman while not being in DDL's class.

DDL is elite, maybe the best actor of our time, but he is not alone. For example, George Clooney is GN&GL is not George Clooney from Oceans 11 is not George Clooney from Syrianna.
