Starts in ancient Nineveh and becomes three interconnected stories set in 1800s London, 2014 Turkey, and 2018 London. Beautifully written. Learned a lot about the Yazidis.
#1b this year is Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward. Brutal account of the life of a slave girl. Wards use of dialect is unmatched. She’s a Michigan grad to boot.
