In fourth or fifth grade we each had to "adopt" a kid in Biafra, which meant that we had to pay at least a dime a week in child support, not for their upkeep but to pay for their Baptisms. (This was in addition to Sunday Offerings we had to bring to Mass to put in the collection basket in a special "Child's Offering" envelope provided. The parish and school checked to make sure that you did not become delinquent in either account.) We got, which I still have, a medallion to hang on the chain around your neck along with your crucifix and brown scapular that said you were a member of the Pontifical Society of the Little Children that saved all the brown pagan babies from an afterlife in Limbo and paid their way into Heaven. I wonder whatever happened to all those children we adopted, er bought, er got scammed out of dimes for to buy food for the nuns...
