There is a straight line progression from "Attack Iran" to "pay $5/gallon at the gas pump." There is no ambiguity, no time lag like with tariffs, no gradual frog boiling in the pot, no debate over terminology like who pays for tariffs, no other program like Obamacare that they can shift blame to. Voters see it literally every day and pay for it every week or two.
The campaign ads write themselves. In farm country, diesel and fertilizer are two of your biggest cost components. Combine it with Trump allowing in cheaper Argentine beef imports and I don't see how you can lose.
