It didn't happen if it's not on strava. I joined originally for the personal heatmap showing everywhere I've ridden, then stuck around for watching total and annual mileage and elevation pile up.
There's a global heatmap that anonymizes everyone's rides and plots them on a map, with darker lines showing most-frequently ridden roads/paths. It's great for planning a ride in unfamiliar territory.
There's also a social component. It's become my only social media-type thing. Fun to see what your friends are up to, and give likes to nice rides/runs/swims. I'll definitely admit to jumping on the bike to one-up a ride posted by a frienemy.
And Wandrer.earth is super cool. It shows the number of *unique* miles you've ridden everywhere and anywhere. The point is to encourage exploration, which is the main reason I ride. I can ride forever when I don't know what's around the next corner.
Link your Strava or rwgps and it will process all the gps data from all your rides and show you the total *unique* miles ridden in every jurisdiction on the globe, from nation, state/province/territory, county, city, town, and down to your neighborhood. After every ride it'll send you the number of "new" miles you did. There's also a point system - 1 point per unique mile, and bonus points for completing 25/50/75/90/99% of a jurisdiction. And leaderboards. Game-ified exploration! It's awesome.
