Cazale appeared in five films, and all got Best Picture Oscar nominations: The two Godfather films, another great Coppola film, The Conversation, Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deerhunter.
I saw The Deerhunter in the theater at the time and found it very disturbing to the point where I've never re-watched it. The other four movies are among my favorite all-time films.
I once heard another actor say of Cazale that he had the really rare capability to play weak characters especially convincingly. When most Hollywood stars play a weak character, this actor said, you can tell that they're a strong personality just playing a weak person. Cazale by contrast so totally inhabited his weak characters that they were more convincing than usual.
