Every team is going to have several teams on its schedule that have a wide range of possible strength, depending on how things come together for them. So take a sort of midrange Big 10 team . . . doesn't matter which. If everything breaks just right for them they could go 8-4, end up ranked, and in a non-fleabag bowl. But if things break badly, if key players don't improve or pan out or are injured, they could just as easily go 5-7. What fans do is when considering their own team's SOS they figure that opponent could very well be 8-4 and ranked and a tough out. But when looking at their rivals' SOS, they assume that team is going to be a 5-7 easy win.
