I agree with him that all of the ESPN content about prop bets tied to individual player performances is cheap and tawdry at best. At worst, it is leaning into a gambling epidemic that is ravaging their core audience. That said, I like the increasing use of betting lines in games because I will always trust the people with skin in the game over the talking heads. Professional opinion havers have little or no accountability. They'll make sweeping statements about teams, they'll turn out to be wrong, and then they move right along. Betting sites have the ultimate form of accountability in that they go out of business if they get their numbers wrong. If you have the Mandels of the world prattling on about how Michigan is going to lose to Iowa and you have a line that moved in Michigan's direction and has sat there, then it's good to have the line sitting their as a counter to the data-free content. I like that the odds have come out of the shadows and are now a prominent part of ESPN's coverage because they tell me more than whatever is tumbling out of Herbstreit's mouth.
