His friend lives in city a few hours drive away from him, and he usually visits him once a year. They've been very close for a long time. So a couple of summers ago he's just gotten to the guy's house for a week-long visit, and the guy's wife, who he's been married to for like thirty years, tells my brother that she needs to discuss something with him privately. My brother figures it's a surprise party or something like that, but instead she just tells him very solemnly that she's been in love with him for a long time and she wants him to know this.
My brother very quickly gears down into thanks that's a really nice compliment and I really appreciate it, and hey what are we doing for dinner tonight?
The rest of the visit is completely normal. He goes back the next summer and continues to act as if nothing happened.
