I’m not going to make this a long post, because I can’t. If you haven’t filled out your organ donor card yet, please consider doing so.

We heard from the recipient of my daughter’s organs. We have received multiple letters from LifeLink, which is the organization that handled the organ donation, but most have been typewritten form letters. As soon as I opened this envelope I knew it was different. Handwritten. I was by myself, working from home at the time, which is not usual for me. I put the envelope down unopened for about an hour. I took a walk. Then I came back and read it.

The recipient is exactly who we would have chosen. Clearly someone who was able to appreciate the gratitude for the enormous gift they received while also understanding our sorrow at giving it. A young father, who described how he has been unable to fully participate in his son’s life because of his health issues. Went from wondering if he was going to see another year, to looking forward to coaching his son in baseball this summer.

I can’t imagine a more complex series of emotions. We had been worried, honestly, that our beautiful, beloved daughter’s gift would go to some asshole. Clearly that didn’t happen. Or someone who didn’t really appreciate the pain and sacrifice behind it. Again, that issue was avoided. At the same time it is bizarre to think part of my little girl is walking around some other person in the world right now. It’s great, it’s terrible, it’s comforting, it’s disturbing. It has taken me months to even be able to talk about this. We got the letter in March.

After lots of time to process, the ultimate point is this: If you or your loved one is in a position to donate organs, do it. No matter how painful and weird and complicated, it is worth it.
