Normal wear and tear is expected: scuffs, scratches, light stains. Major stuff like holes in the wall, broken glass, missing parts of light fixtures, ok, yes, they should charge you. But that is probably uncommon.

Some landlords are unethical assholes, and it is probably increasing in the age of Trump.
