My biggest somewhat irrational fear when I travel is always that something will break at home.
When our kids were little and we used cloth diapers our washer broke the first day of a M-F trip. All sorts of anxiety. Expensive repair bill we couldn't easily afford at the the time. We drive modest cars and tend to drive them well after they're paid off. Earlier in life that meant some were at 10yrs and 150k+. Then my kids started driving. Always stressful when I'm not at home and something is wrong with a car.
I took a trip for a job interview yesterday and the dryer died. Kids need work uniforms cleaned. All the towels are dirty. Not the end of the world, but the stuff that gets more annoying when you're not home to deal with immediately. The resistance on this motor starting circuit should be 2.7-3.0 ohms. Our not that old Maytag dryer need replacing. The paired washer has also had issues and burned out two computer boards so we'll replace the set. There is never a good time to need to spend money on something big and unexpected, but at least it isn't going to wipe out our savings like it would've when I was in my 20's.
