It’s that time of the year. I don’t seem to be able to grow them in Phoenix (many can) but when I live in Chicago I lined the flower beds surrounding my house with starter plants (Beefsteak mostly) and a soaker hose in April and would have a full crop by July and August. In the summer humidity you could almost hear them growing, to the point the would sometimes burst their skins.

I always had way more than I could eat, so I took bunches to give away at work.

They were a meal unto themselves, as the song says.
