One other note on fruit: I don't care for cantaloupes from the store, but some of the ones I've had from the farmers market are fantastic.

Ones from the store are generally bland and almost crunchy. The ones that are picked and brought to the farmers market are picked close to ripeness and are generally softer and more sweet and flavorful. Leaving them on the counter allows them to ripen even more.

There are a few varieties that I know of. tem mentioned something similar to sugarcubes below. Those are great, but I like charentais French melons even more (see pic). The issue is that they aren't available for more than 3-4 weeks per year depending on where you live.

On melons sold at the market, I rank them: 1. cantaloupe, 2. honeydew, 3. watermelon.
