James Garner starred in the 1969 film Marlowe. It was based on The Little Sister, a Philip Marlowe novel by Raymond Chandler. It was updated to the current era (late 60's). The Rockford Files was also based on his old western tv show The Mavericks. They had to be less honest about the Marlowe inspiration due to copyright issues, but Jim Rockford is an updated Philip Marlowe.

All this doesn't change that the re-boot will suck though.
