Got to keep the NC culture, got to keep the Harbaugh SMASH vibe, etc. He was young and could have coached literally for decades at UM if he had reached a certain reasonably modest level of annual success and kept out of the headlines off-field. That realization probably incentivizes a conservative approach.

Whittingham knows his tenure here will be fairly short no matter what, and will largely define his legacy as a coach. Was he a great coach who finally got his shot at the big time, or was he a guy who had a good, long run at a 2nd tier school and didn’t know when to call it quits

    - Don't think the argument is that a coach wouldn't try to win one, but they might avoid high-variance decisions that could cost them a job if things play out negatively.
