Total wins matter more than strength of schedule. If SOS mattered, Texas which beat (at the time) #3 A&M and #6 Oklahoma and lost to #1 OSU & #5 Georgia should have been in....

Alabama only played (at the time) one top 10 team-beat Georgia.

ND only played (at the time) one top 10 team-lost to Miami

Yet the 12th spot came down to Alabama or ND, both with 10 wins, while 9-win Texas was not considered.
