The problem is Harris spent the money wrong, at least with the pen, and then decided the team wasn't good enough and traded his ace and 3rd/4th starter. But the team was heavily injured and slumping early but has been playing well for 9 weeks or so now (and they were decent in April too); it was May that killed them when they were decimated.

They easily could have decided to stay all in, but they panicked at the deadline because they were afraid they'd lose Skubal for nothing. Same with Mize although they would have received a comp pick not far off where Mayfield was picked.
