What attracted me to Grandstream is that you have multiple options for the controller - you can designate one of the APs as the master node so that it functions both as the controller and as an AP. Or you can grab their VM image and run a dedicated controller (probably reserved for more technical users who already have a virtualized home server or home lab). Or you can use their cloud-based controller.
None of these options require any kind of ongoing subscription. 2 of the 3 options are completely local. 2 of the 3 options don't require buying any separate or additional hardware. Just pick what option suits your needs best.
On top of that, the hardware and firmware has been incredibly solid for me. I have 2 AP's currently, about to add a 3rd as we are adding on to our house. They run for months and months without issue, the only time I reboot them is when I update their firmware once or twice a year.
