You may have a specific offensive philosophy but as HC there are so many more angles you have to worry about. I'm guessing he had a vague sense of SMASH, since he worked under JH but there's so much detail involved with making that work that it's probably impossible to fully pick it up, and I'm guessing JH wasn't one to really spell it out for his assistants to begin with.
