Should add that he had 36.3 bWAR as a pitcher, then added 4.6 bWAR as a hitter, so MB wasn't wrong. He also retired at 33

His career had a very odd shape since he started pitching in MLB at 19 and retired at 33.
Odd fact; the shitass KC Athletics team he played on as a rookie also had a brief appearance from 58 year old Satchel Paige. He started a game and threw three scoreless innings. 1 hit, 1 K, 0 BB.

Catfish Hunter, 224 wins and a 3.27 ERA but a WAR of 40.9 That is perplexing.*

Hunter had 36.3 bWAR, 37.2 fWAR. But check out Hunter’s peak, 1971-1975: 190 starts, 25.1 bWAR, 111-49, 2.65 ERA, 3.36 FIP, 127 ERA+. He’s also a big deal

Not exactly responding to your point, but… Luis Tiant, 229 wins, 3.30 ERA, 114 ERA+, 66.1 bWAR, not in HOF. Clearly better than Morris or Hunter (and a lot of other pitchers), especially if you put any stock in WAR.*

Lazy stadium night. Catfish on the mound “Strike three,” the umpire said. Batter have to go back and sit down. Catfish, million-dollar-man. Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can...
