I keep hearing people say “but they said the clocks were synced” and “but the clock in the stadium hit :00 before it was touched,” both of which are true. But every second is comprised of, you know, ten tenths of a second, and you are supposed to get that entire second, not part of it. When the clock hits seven seconds it stays on :07 until all of those tenths expire, then it ticks to :06. When it hits :00 that isn’t immediately the end of the game time. There is nowhere else for it to “tick,” so you can’t see the change visually, but you still get all those tenths.

As I said yesterday, I heard a radio interview of some national journalist who was in the press box and said that up there, they had officials with the actual game clock, which does track to the tenths of a second, and they all knew — in real time — that time remained and a second would be put back on the clock.

I don’t know how big a task it would be to have football stadium clocks change to track tenths, like they do in basketball, but if it is relatively easy they should do it. Would avoid a lot of this consternation.
