Book Series Recommendation: Dungeon Crawler Carl.(m)(image)(link)
Gonzo sci-fi/fantasy mashup of a few different genres: alien invasion + hunger games + dungeons & dragons + the running man. Coast Guard vet Carl finds himself stuck in the midst of a galaxy-wide reality show wearing nothing but boxer shorts & his leather jacket, along with his ex-girlfriend’s (now sentient) prize winning show cat, Princess Donut.
It ain’t Faulkner, but I’m finding it insanely addictive & fun. Funny, gory as hell, bizarre, etc, although some of the “RPG” elements can occasionally get a little tiresome. Overall though, the story is great—especially once the plot of the “meta” world beyond the dungeon walls (the various alien races & corporations running the game) come into play. It’s like an 8+ book series (and counting), and I’ve torn through the first 3 books in a few weeks.

- It is a fun series. I'm on book 4 now. Listening to audiobooks through my library*
- Starting with Book 3 is when the DCC stories get much richer... the introduction of new charters (Katia, etc) and plot points really elevate the series.
- I'm slow-reading Parade because it's the last one (so far).*
- Peacock streaming picked it up as a TV series. Seth McFarland signed on as a producer.*
- I started the series in mid-June and just finished book 4. Highly entertaining*
- Yes, this is a great series but I only really listen to the audiobooks. Jeff Hayes does amazing work with the voices. *
- I basically read them all back to back. Must read for anyone who has enjoyed RPG over the years.*
