It takes about a book and a half for Jeff Hays to work out the voices...they change a little. But Carl's voice settles into the deep, affected voice you are referencing...

you are in the definite minority if that is an issue for you. My fav two characters voices are awesome and make the characters.... prepotente and samantha.
