28-32: 694 games, .319/.369/.420, .790 OPS, 122 OPS+

33-37: 632 games, .368/ .412/.508, .920 OPS, 146 OPS+

Now, I would say that’s probably because expansion in Gwynn’s age 33 season diluted the pitching talent pool (along with a couple other factors), but most hitters whose numbers improved so substantially are accused of juicing.

    - That's misleading. Gwynn suffered injuries to his index finger, thumb, wrist & achilles in the 1988-90 seasons, and mostly played through them. He was also injured in subsequent seasons, but went on the DL. He also notably changed his mechanics in 1992 after meeting w/Ted Williams.... - By Brad September 10, 2026 at 02:41:57 PM
