Realistically, the Strait of Hormuz is only a temporary leverage point. We’ve had workable alternatives to reduce reliance there for 40 years, we & others just didn’t want to pay for them.

Similar issue happened to the Suez Canal in the late 60s/early 70s. When it went offline it caused a lot of temporary problems but then shipping changed (freight ship size quadrupled-ish to adjust for the less direct route) and the Suez Canal lost a lot of its importance. Many modern ships can’t fit in it.
