We were briefly united and then W chose to spend the rest of his term on tax cuts for the wealthy and the Iraq War. He ran for re-election using opposition to gay marriage and Swiftboating John Kerry. We definitely were not united for long. And yet W at least put in the effort to try to convince the country that invading Iraq was the right thing to do. He was totally wrong about that and the evidence they used was misleading at best and mendacious at worst but at least he treated the consent of the governed as something worth obtaining. Trump didn't even bother with Iran.

None of that takes anything away from your story about Meredith, which is beautiful. I'm just riffing off the comment about the country being united. We were but it was brief.
