I was an MBA 2000. My roommate and I both interned at Lehman.

My roommate took a job there and was on the desk that morning. Lehman was 3WFC - connected by tunnels to WTC. You took the train or subway in to world trade and walked through.

After the first plane hit, security came on the hoot and told everybody to stay at their desk. It was unsafe to go outside due to falling debris.

Luckily for him the corporate bond desk was staffed with a bunch of old timers who had been there for the truck bombing. They all said “fuck that - time to get the hell out of here”

My buddy was last one off his desk - he was on the Bloomberg with his guy at Cantor. The Cantor guys were all trapped above the fire. The Bloomberg was their only way to communicate. I know their conversation wasn’t pretty.

My roommate was on the street about two blocks away when the tower came down. He still won’t talk about that part at all. I know he was squarely in the death zone. People around him didn’t make it. Somehow he did. 30 seconds made all the difference.

On a somewhat lighter note - there were a lot of MBAs from my class who worked in the WTC/WFC. As we all started connecting - it became apparent that all the IBs were late for work that morning. The gallows humor was that was the real “Michigan difference”
