Inspired by friends of my parents who lived in Barcelona for three months per year for four years in a row. They'd rent their Venice, FL home out while there, and that covered their total costs of living in Barcelona.
We plan to pick a city every year and live their for 90 days on a regular tourist visa, then back to the States for the other nine months. Probably Madrid first, then choose our adventure the following years.
Live like a local, just as you said. No pressure to do any particular thing on any given day. Just whatever we feel like. Develop a favorite cafe and nice restaurant and bar and market and walk, etc. Explore nooks and crannies by bike. I cannot wait.
