I believe this is yet another rule intended to make things “fair” for the poverty schools. Yes, the precisely synced image provided by the Hawkeye system that the refs in the M/Western game used is more precise and accurate than what was on NBC. Yes, there was still time on the scoreboard clock when the ball was touched by the player who came from OOB and so there was actually one play left. But only the Big 10 and SEC (maybe ND) have the very expensive Hawkeye technology. Toledo vs Akron MACtion broadcast on ESPN 9 on a Tuesday night in November won’t have it. So all of college football has to live with inaccurate results going forward because we want to pretend that Coastal Carolina is on completely equal footing with Georgia.
