The first: you cut a more expensive drug, and to mask the fact that you weakened it you add a touch of fentanyl to kick up the potency. Fentanyl (in those tiny quantities) is cheaper.

The second: illicit drug makers don’t sanitize equipment. They use equipment to process fentanyl, then the same equipment to process something else, and fentanyl gets in. It’s so potent that even contamination quantities can kill
