Piggybacking all this from a single dad who managed to raise a football fan daughter…

Paul is exactly right, and my single biggest stroke of genius was establishing a rule: “when you want to go, you tell me, I’ll ask one time if you’re sure, and then we’ll go, no guilt no questions.”

Made it through first quarter at age 4, halftime at 5, middle of third quarter at 6, and now watches until the end and wants to.

Also: if the kids express confusion, buy an “explaining football to kids” book. It’s a vastly more confusing and less intuitive game than you remember. Hint: start with the objective to get a first down. “Four tries to get ten yards.” Just get in the habit of thinking that it’s all about the first down line. The rest of the rules stack on that.
